(above image: Kimono by Jackie Abrams)
Explore shape, color, surface textures, and weaving
techniques, using hand-painted cotton paper as the basket material. Learn bias
plaiting and cathead weaving, along with their endless variations. Cover the
surfaces with applications of materials such as paper, paints, and knotless
netting. Discover the connections between material and form, and the new surface
in relation to the underlying vessel. All welcome.

W
O V E N celebrates the limitless artistic expressions of an ancient
technique applied to materials new and old, unexpected and comforting.
Ranging from works including common weaving materials like cotton and
wool to the more exploratory – bullet-riddled steel, wire, tennis balls –
the artists in this exhibition engage in an energetic dialogue between
contemporary visual culture and the traditions of the textile industry.
Highlighting
the interdependence of ingenuity, skill and imagination, the objects
making up this exhibition celebrate freedom from functional constraint.
The overriding issues are: does the artist's imagination and ability to
execute his/her concept spark an awesome, unexpected visual and
emotional reaction – and if so, will it encourage the viewer to liberate
his/her imagination to a place previously unrevealed? Curated by Sylvia
Leonard Wolf and Tina Bromberg, W O V E N transforms the gallery space
at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts into a fantastical, web-like
exploration of space, scale, texture, and color.
The artists in the exhibition are: Susan
Brandeis, Yale Epstein, Marsha Farley, John Garrett, Rob Goldfarb,
Sheila Hicks, Nancy Koenigsberg, Alex Kveton, Jorge Lizarazo for
Hechizoo Textiles, Lael Marshall, David Poppie, Kate Rapin, Joanne
Russo, Zoe Siegel, Mamie Spiegel, Altoon Sultan, Harriet Tannin, Suzanne
Tick, Grace Wapner, James Brendan Williams, Bhakti Ziek.
